Serra Angel Playmats

Our Serra Angel playmats span four illustrators — Douglas Shuler's original 1993 Alpha art across eight playmats, plus versions by Greg Staples, Scott M. Fischer and Rebecca Guay. Most are signed, several sketched or stitched, and three are Limited Editions of 500 and 50 copies, one of them a numbered Artist Proof.

Thirteen illustrators, and still Standard-legal

Serra Angel debuted in Limited Edition Alpha (1993) with art by Douglas Shuler, and it is still legal in Standard today, as well as in Pioneer, Modern, Legacy, Pauper, Old School and Commander. Thirteen artists have illustrated it across 67 printings; four of them are represented here. Greg Staples painted the Ninth Edition version (2005), the first to replace Shuler's original on a retail card, and Scott M. Fischer the Dominaria Promos version (2018). Rebecca Guay's illustration appeared only in an oversized 1996 promo rather than on a tournament-playable card.

Shuler's own reinterpretation

Three playmats are “Sexy Serra Angel,” an alternative take on the subject by Shuler himself, inspired by his Alpha artwork rather than reproducing it. One of the three is a mouse pad rather than a playmat.

What's in this collection

Most playmats here are signed, and several are sketched or stitched. Three are Limited Editions: a stitched run of 500 copies and a stitched run of 50, both using Shuler's art, plus a run of 50 with Staples'. One of the Shuler pieces is a numbered Artist Proof, limited to 50 copies, both sketched and stitched. A separate multi-artist playmat from Eternal Weekend 2017 is hand-drawn and signed by several artists, and includes Serra Angel among its subjects; it isn't solo Shuler work. The Guay version comes from Grand Prix Melbourne 2016.

Condition and photographs

Because most of these are signed, and several individually sketched and numbered, condition and edition number matter as much as the artwork. Every listing uses real photographs of the actual playmat, so you can check the surface, the signature and (where relevant) the edition number before buying.
