From Theros to Middle-earth and beyond
Magali Villeneuve's Magic illustrations first appeared in Theros (2013) and continue into current sets, most recently The Hobbit (2026). She has contributed to Secret Lair steadily since 2019. Her Universes Beyond work spans The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth, Final Fantasy and The Hobbit — a range represented here directly by Gandalf the White and three Final Fantasy pieces.
What's in this collection
Five playmats come from Grand Prix events: Graceblade Artisan (Paris 2015), Pore Over the Pages (Charlotte 2016), Scrapper Champion (Orlando 2017), Negate (Lyon 2018) and Silvergill Adept (Seattle 2018). Cloud, Planet's Champion and Sephiroth, Planet's Heir were released at MagicCon Las Vegas 2025 with spot foil, and Y'shtola, Night's Blessed and Liliana, Waker of the Dead are offered as standard playmats without event branding. Chandra, Torch of Defiance comes in two versions: one signed, and a stitched exclusive from Essen 2024. “Monk vs Fire Golem,” made for the MKM Series Madrid 2015, is original event artwork rather than a card illustration, and is signed.
A double-sided playmat with two artists
The Elesh Norn / Atraxa, Grand Unifier playmat is double-sided and carries one illustration by each of two artists. Villeneuve illustrated Elesh Norn, which debuted in March of the Machine (2023); Atraxa, Grand Unifier is by Marta Nael, from Phyrexia: All Will Be One (2023). It isn't a solo Villeneuve piece.
