Karl Kopinski Playmats

Our Karl Kopinski playmats include Aether Vial, originally illustrated for From the Vault: Relics (2010), from a Grand Prix Bologna 2016 side event; a VIP playmat from Grand Prix Florence 2015; and two versions of a 2011 promotional illustration featuring Liliana Vess, made for Wizards of the Coast marketing and a licensed Ultra PRO accessory line rather than for a printed card.

A career spanning nearly two decades

Karl Kopinski's Magic illustrations first appeared in Shards of Alara (2008) and continue into current sets, most recently Secrets of Strixhaven Commander (2026). He is a British illustrator best known outside Magic for his work on Warhammer 40,000, including Commissar Yarrick.

A 2011 illustration made for marketing, not for a card

Two playmats in this collection feature Liliana Vess artwork that Kopinski made for Wizards of the Coast in 2011 — used in marketing and in a licensed Ultra PRO accessory line, never printed on an actual Magic card. This is a different illustration from any official Liliana Vess card art. The two playmats offer the same illustration in two versions: one with the Innistrad logo, one with an Ultra PRO life counter.

What's in this collection

Aether Vial was originally illustrated by Kopinski for From the Vault: Relics (2010), later reprinted in Modern Masters, Iconic Masters and Double Masters; this playmat is from a Grand Prix Bologna 2016 side event. A second playmat commemorates Grand Prix Florence 2015 as a VIP print.
