From Scars of Mirrodin to today
Johannes Voss's Magic illustrations first appeared in Scars of Mirrodin (2010); his most recent published appearance is Secrets of Strixhaven Commander (2026). He has contributed to Secret Lair between 2020 and 2024. A substantial part of his Magic work is co-credited with Jana Schirmer, and three playmats here carry both names.
Original event art, not Magic cards
Three playmats show the angel Voss created for Grand Prix Chiba 2015, listed as Konohanasakuya-hime — original artwork made for the event, not an illustration of any Magic card. The same is true of “Shizuoka Shrine,” made for Players Convention Shizuoka.
What's in this collection
Gift of Orzhova and the three Grand Prix Chiba pieces are signed; one of the Chiba playmats is also stitched. Angelic Destiny, from TwitchCon Las Vegas 2023, is stitched and co-credited with Jana Schirmer, as are Phyrexian Metamorph from Grand Prix Vancouver BC 2014 and Thalia, Guardian of Thraben from a Star City Games Open. Voss was the first artist to illustrate Angelic Destiny, Gift of Orzhova and Thalia, Guardian of Thraben.
Condition and photographs
Because many of these are signed pieces, condition matters as much as the artwork. Every listing uses real photographs of the actual playmat, so you can check the surface and the signature before buying.
