What Grand Prix was
Grand Prix (GP) tournaments were Wizards of the Coast's open Magic events, requiring no qualification unlike the invitation-only Pro Tour. The first was held in Amsterdam in March 1997. Starting in 2019, Grand Prix was folded into a broader event called MagicFest, and the series ended entirely in 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic forced its cancellation. Our catalog spans 2006 through 2019, across 89 cities in North America, Europe and Asia, plus one stop each in South America (Buenos Aires, 2015) and Oceania (Melbourne, 2016) — Las Vegas is the most represented city, with 14 pieces, followed by Providence and Houston.
What's in this collection
The catalog runs from a single Grand Prix New Jersey 2006 piece to Grand Prix Las Vegas 2019; the bulk clusters in 2013–2016, with 2015 alone accounting for roughly a third of it. Christopher Rush leads by a wide margin, with 29 pieces — including his original Black Lotus and Lightning Bolt illustrations from Limited Edition Alpha. Several are signed, and many come in small numbered Limited Editions, from as few as 20 copies up to 100. Mark Poole (6, his Urza's Tower art from Antiquities), Jason Rainville (5), Magali Villeneuve (5) and Chris Rahn (5) are the next most represented. Beyond standard playmats, the catalog includes 7 VIP editions, 5 Judge playmats, 4 Side Event pieces, and one Commander Championship playmat.
Condition and photographs
Because several of these are signed and many are individually numbered pieces, condition and edition number matter as much as the artwork. Every listing uses real photographs of the actual playmat, so you can check the surface, the signature and (where relevant) the edition number before buying.
