Ken Meyer Jr. Playmats

Our Ken Meyer Jr. playmats span his Arabian Nights and Ice Age illustrations — Guardian Beast, Kird Ape, Erhnam Djinn, Stone-Throwing Devils and Mystic Remora — alongside his Tempest Dark Ritual and a large body of original, non-card pieces. Most are signed, several stitched, and five are mouse pads rather than playmats.

From Arabian Nights onward

Ken Meyer, Jr. — credited that way on the cards themselves — first appeared in Arabian Nights (1993), Magic's first expansion, where he illustrated five cards, Guardian Beast, Kird Ape, Erhnam Djinn and Stone-Throwing Devils among them. Seven more debuted in Ice Age (1995), including Mystic Remora. He was the first artist to illustrate every one of those. Dark Ritual is the exception: his version arrived in Tempest (1997) on a card already printed since 1993. His most recent appearance was a Dark Ritual reprint in Tempest Remastered (2015) — a Magic Online-only digital set, never printed physically.

What's in this collection

Most playmats here are signed and several are stitched, many offered both as a plain signed version and as a colour-stitched one. The Dark Ritual is also available as a signed Limited Edition of 50 copies. Five pieces are mouse pads rather than playmats, among them Guardian Beast, Kird Ape and “Jay the Bob Sculptor.”

Original pieces and wordplay

A large part of this collection is original artwork rather than illustration of printed Magic cards. “Brainstorm, Dude!”, “Worldly Toker”, “Snoop (DeChronic Tutor)”, “Beach Blanket Beasto”, “Jay the Bob Sculptor”, “Good Vibes Only”, “Pulp Affliction Mofo!”, “Arabian Jungle”, “Arabian Poker Night”, “Deadpool Power Nine” and “You Shall Not Pass!” are standalone designs, several of them playing on the names of real Magic cards. None corresponds to an official card printing.

Multi-artist pieces and event playmats

Three playmats are multi-artist collaborations, included here because he is one of the credited artists rather than solo work: “Elemental Obsidian Vx 2005” from Khalsa Brain Games, “Eternal Weekend 2017” and “The Gathering: Reuniting Pioneering Artists of Magic.” Two more use original artwork he made for specific events — the Old School World Championship at Winc0n Genova 2022 and the Magic Card Market Official Series Rome 2015.

Condition and photographs

Because most of these are signed, individually finished pieces, condition matters as much as the artwork. Every listing uses real photographs of the actual playmat, so you can check the surface and the signature before buying.
